How Important Is Education?

I wish to take a look at how important education is and how much of a difference it can make in your life. Ask yourself this question, if you had an extra million dollars, do you think that it would make a difference in your life?
The odds are good that a million dollars would make a major difference in most people's lives. A college degree increases how much money you will earn in your lifetime by about a million dollars over having just a high school diploma. That amount is even greater if you did not finish high school.
Of course, there are skeptics and those who always look for excuses, who say that there a many millionaires out there who have only a high school diploma or less. They will also say that there are college graduates who are unemployed. Yes, they are correct; however, those are exceptions and in reality a college degree provides many more opportunities than merely a high school diploma or less.
I can tell you from personal experience that not having a degree can be an obstacle even when you are intelligent and things seem to be going your way. In my experience, I always excelled at whatever job that I may be doing. I would outperform everyone else and exceed what was expected of me by my employer. Then came the glass ceiling. I would climb the ladder to a point where I would be told that I couldn't move to the next level because I didn't have a college degree. It did not matter how good I was or that I was more than capable of performing well at the next level. I found this to be discouraging. I would eventually seek other opportunities and began that climb again, usually with the same result.
I eventually was able to go into business for myself. I was the owner and there was no glass ceiling. I did fairly well owning my own businesses. However, I found that there were many things that I did not know. I made a difficult choice and I sold my businesses and decided to get a college degree. I can look back and see where I could have improved and been more successful had I the education that I have now. This was an important lesson to learn and the reason that I am sharing this message now.
Although money is a major necessity in life, education is far more important for many reasons. The ability to communicate with others in society requires that one should have some form of formal education. The ability to speak, read and write, are the most important skills that we have. Without the ability to read and write you will be stuck in a position where you are at the mercy of others. You will be limited in your ability to earn a living and you will be subjected to doing jobs that others will not. You will be taken advantage of by those who hold themselves above you.
It is not impossible to become successful without a high school diploma. However, there will be many hurdles to overcome and the odds are that without a diploma you will not be successful.
I know firsthand that there are many more doors that are closed to those without a high school diploma. Just the sheer embarrassment of writing on an application that I had only a GED was very stressful. It made me feel less than adequate even though I knew I wasn't.
It is very difficult just to get in front of a hiring manager to show them that you are can do a job and have great skills and abilities, even for someone who is hardworking and smart. Very few hiring managers are going to talk to you if you do not list a high school diploma on your job application.
Currently the economy is tough and there are many people searching for few jobs. It will not get much easier to find a job. The job market for young adults fresh out of high school is declining. The pay for jobs that you can get without a college diploma is far below what it is for a graduate.
An eighteen-year-old fresh out of high school will not earn enough money to take survive without some form of assistance. On average, he or she will live at or below the national poverty level. Therefore, the answer is, yes! Education is very important.
Learning and education are the most important things that you can do for yourself. If you do not have a high school diploma. Look into getting yourself back into school and getting your diploma. Doors will open for you and you will feel much better about yourself. Also, pick up some books on a subject that you like. Reading is a rapid way to increase your knowledge. The more you know, the more valuable you will be to employers. Always be learning and you will find the success that you desire!
