As a homeschooler one of the most important tasks for you to accomplish in your child at an early age is getting them interested in and developing good reading habits. At an early age learning to recognize letters, the sounds they make and words they eventually form should be an activity and not a structured assignment. A great reading activity for kindergarten aged children, for example is to read to them.

As we are about to embark on a teaching career we as English teachers need to be aware that our students will not always share the same enthusiasm and passion we have for reading. Jeffrey Wilhelm's article "When Reading is Stupid; the Why, How and What to Do About It" is therefore of particular relevance as it discusses the issue of how teachers can motivate their students to read more.

This article is part of a four part series that discusses how to teach reading and the specialized approach needed within the guided reading philosophy. Simply put, guided reading has many aspects but is a driving philosophy about how to teach children to read. Adopted in most parts of the developed world (Canada, U.S. (midwest), England, New Zealand and Australia, guided reading is now one of the most utilized ways to teach reading.

Reading is a difficult process. The brain must be doing several things at once in order to make sense out of the written word. Many things can go wrong when a student is learning to read. Kids who struggle with reading struggle with life. If there is just one skill you can spend time on to help a student succeed in school and life, it would be reading.

The Simple Magic of Reading http://eslarticle.com/pub/articles/teaching/reading/the-simple-magic-of-reading-138.htm http://eslarticle.com/uploads/ "Books make a complete man," said a man centuries ago. This holds true today as yesterday. Sadly, the young generation might have lost interest in reading books because more and more forms of entertainment compete for their attention. Movies enchant them, music and MTV grab their attention, and computer games challenge their skills. This is very disheartening, especially if we will take into consideration the vast amount of knowledge that we miss if we fail to read voraciously.

What do you think about babies and how they learn to speak? Do they know any grammar rule? Do they know any phonetics hint? Surely, they don't. So why do children master such difficult languages and Arabic, Japanese or Russian with no effort? What have adults forgotten that made them able to master their own language? Thus, because of the fact they've forgotten it they can hardly learn at least one more language.

Instead of getting involved in the wrangling over a definition, one could simply use the "symptoms" below as an indication that a child has a reading problem and therefore needs help.

If the reader does not know anything about the subject, then reading over the prose is more challenging and often the reader does not retain as much of the text. These are a few ways to help improve reading.

That's what makes Who Reads What -- a directory of celebrities' favorite books assembled over a twenty-year period by Glenna Nowell of the tiny Gardiner (Maine) Public Library -- so immensely fascinating. Sometimes the books seem to confirm exactly what we think we already know about their readers.

The classroom procedures for introducing new vocabulary involves, to a great extent, the three R's: review, repeat, recycle both on sound and meaning levels on beginning, ending and middle sounds and those respective sound clusters. Planning in this respect should evolve around simultaneous practice around decoding and retrieving a word's meaning.

Scaffolding Strategies for Enhancing Reading: A Survey of Literature http://eslarticle.com/pub/articles/teaching/reading/scaffolding-strategies-for-enhancing-reading-a-survey-of-literature-5731.htm http://eslarticle.com/uploads/_notregistered/art_5731_550ec80f6b~.jpg

Enhancing students' reading is one of the major concerns in the field of teaching. There are different strategies that teachers can follow in order to support and encourage students to read properly as well as developing their critical thinking. Among those strategies is scaffolding. Many studies have shed the light on the use of scaffolded instruction in the classroom. The present paper seeks to survey the literature in order to reflect on the following questions: What is scaffolding? What kinds of scaffolding strategies can teachers use to encourage students to read properly? How is scaffolding proved to be an effective strategy? Several definitions of scaffolding will be given. Next, the theory behind scaffolding will be highlighted. Finally, a review of related literature, starting from 1991 to a more recent research in 2008, will be demonstrated.

Time and time again through the years I have encountered kids who struggle to read, who hate reading and perhaps for that very reason are disillusioned with school in general, yet when they find themselves with a part in the show, the script they are given to read and memorize never leaves their side. The opportunity to be in a show sometimes provides the best - often the first - real motivation for a young actors to voluntarily pick up a book and read...their script!
