Learning Outside Classrooms: A Necessity of The 21st Century

“Knowledge is an elixir that immortalizes you and what you create out of it.” This quote aptly explains the gravity of why one must possess sufficient knowledge. The primary source of acquiring knowledge is from the traditional setting of a classroom. Classroom learning has been prevalent since the age of Plato and Aristotle. The basic definition of classroom learning includes the imparting of knowledge from a learned individual to pupils in organized methods. This traditional approach to education is partly resilient and partly constrained. When it comes to instilling discipline into students with knowledge, this approach can be assumed viable. But when the question of an all-encompassing and qualitative education arises, this approach lags behind extensively.

To make up what is lost in the traditional approach to learning, a contemporary formula of learning outside the classroom has to be applied. This approach assists young students to relish the pleasures of learning, through experiences of adventures outside the concrete walls. Through this approach, a teacher can aid students’ engagement which is seldom attainable in classrooms, enhance behavior, and inculcate a sense of companionship. The surroundings where learning outside the classroom approach is applied can pose a pivotal effect on how a student comprehends engagement.

To quote the ingenious Albert Einstein, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” This quote advocates the learning outside the classroom approach. This approach emphasizes more on what ways a child must learn rather than what it should learn. Its purpose is to enhance students’ comprehension, skills, ideals, personal and social development, and to be a vessel to improve their capacity and motivation to learn. According to the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, this approach tackles social mobility, which provides the students with firsthand experiences of the real world. This, in turn, assists them to explore their potential.

Learning outside the classroom also caters to eradicating educational dissimilarities by focusing on that group of children who find it difficult to engage in the traditional classroom setting. According to the UCLA National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing, participation in learning outside the classroom and afterschool programs have been associated with reduced drug use by 37.9 percent and reduced juvenile crime rate by 43.4 percent between the years 2012-2017.

Thus, learning outside classrooms not only boosts positive engagement, socialization capabilities, and motivation, but also instills resistance to seclusion, loss of confidence, or drug usage. The best examples that justify learning outside the classroom are afterschool lessons and summer programs. In this way, a student receives exposure to a natural surrounding and is benefited with enriched personal and social interaction skills; improved physical health; amplified mental and spiritual health; the capacity to impose personal control and improved sensitivity towards one’s well-being.

Talentnook, with a mission to make after-school learning stress-free for parents and students, provides a platform which aids those who seek knowledge of new skills which may not necessarily be taught in schools.  Herein, the progress-driven activities inculcate new skills or enhance knowledge, by learning from those who are trained in that particular discipline. Talentnook connects parents and students to their neighbors to form learning groups and also connects member students and parents with teachers of their choice. In doing so, Talentnook prioritizes the safety of member students and makes a mandatory background check of enrolled teachers. The residential address of each member is also verified. Talentnook advocates a concord of the need and provision of knowledge, making it a sought-after platform for parents, students, teachers, and the community.
