Sitting for the Praxis exam can be tough, especially when the test just won't cut you any slack. The Praxis exams were just designed to make things difficult for you, but do realize this is only because they want the cream of the crop to educate America's future generation!
Having this in mind, it is important that you are aware of some of the tricks the Praxis examination board may have set up in the test to catch test takers who don't pay enough attention to detail. Here are some of the things to look out for when you are answering your Praxis test:
1) Always look out for the words "except", "at least", "but" and other such words that indicate that you should be picking an answer that does not answer the statement or question provided. Underline these words or circle them so that you can clearly tell yourself which answer to pick. It is easy to overlook these simple words, but if you keep an eye out for them, you will know instantly which answer to pick, and reduce risk of picking a wrong answer.
2) Even though the exam board has given you the option of skipping questions to answer later, be sure to always double or even triple check that you have marked the answers for all the questions on the correct corresponding ovals on the answer sheet. Numerous test takers end up failing the Praxis out of the simple mistake of marking one answer on the wrong oval, and continuing so with the rest of their answers as they did not realize that the order has been wrongly changed. So always remember to check. Better safe than sorry!
3) No matter how confident you are that you know the Praxis test format, never ever think in your mind that you should skip reading the instructions to save time! You may never know if the exam board decides to change the format of the exam that year, even if it's just by 5%. Don't waste precious marks because you skipped reading the instructions given about a particular section before attempting the questions. It's a big no-no!
4) When you attempt the questions in the Praxis test, you will come across many questions of which at first glance you know the answer, but are in doubt as to whether the answer you had in mind is right or wrong the moment you look at the answer options provided. Yes, most times the answers may seem tricky or confusing, but always go with your gut. You studied, so you know what answer is required in the question. Do not let the other given answer options confuse you or drive you to doubt yourself.
And that's all there is to it. The tips above may seem trivial but they are often what test takers do not follow, and leads them to walk the path of failure. Don't be one of those test takers, and be alert during the Praxis exam. All the best!
