In order to become an English teacher, one must be fluent in English with a sound educational background and must complete a certified English teacher training course. Specialization in a specific academic field is not mandatory to become an English teacher but a proper teacher training course is.

Aspirants interested in pursuing a career in teaching English must first enrol for a teacher training course suitable to the personal area of interest and expertise. Even experienced teachers would find the courses beneficial. A lot of institutes are offering online teacher training courses which have the same credibility and recognition as their onsite counterparts. Moreover, one can go through an online teacher training course from the luxury of their homes avoiding the time, money and inconvenience associated with traveling. Anyone with an internet connection would have easy access to these courses and are provided with assistance and help through voice and chat facilities on the internet. Students and experienced teachers unable to go through a course because of time constraints would particularly find the online teacher training courses useful.

The TEFL Certificate and the TESOL program are the two most popular courses for becoming English teachers because of their universal recognition and accreditation.

The TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) Certificate Course is apt for teaching English to young learners and familiarizes teachers with child psyche. The TEFL Certificate Course trains a teacher on teaching the basic language skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teachers in this course also learn the ways of enhancing vocabulary. It is imperative for language classes to be interactive in nature to enable the trainees to break free from their inhibitions and participate actively and to communicate in a foreign language. The TEFL Certificate Course trains a teacher to make tailored training sessions understandable to the young learners and to execute lessons in a participatory nature helping in retention of knowledge. It helps teachers to teach young learners about the basic understanding and usage of tense in English language.

The TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages or Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) program is a more advanced program and is designed to train teachers on the art of teaching English as a second language to non-English speaking people. This course is designed for teaching English to people of all age groups. The TESOL program delves a lot deeper into the fundamentals of English language like grammar, context setting, syntax and phonetics. This course emphasizes on the nuances like tense and helps teachers to teach these aspects of English language to students and trainees. A teacher in a TESOL program is also trained on trainee psyche and plan customized courses suitable for a particular trainee group. Teachers are trained to teach and help people from different regional, linguistic and social backgrounds to communicate and express themselves in English language using correct grammar and tenses. TESOL certified English teachers teach English to large and mixed groups and handle any opposition or crisis that may arise within a classroom.
