Working as an English teacher in Mexico has been a very rewarding experience. I've been teaching English in Mexico for well over two years now. It's been a lot of fun and my Mexican students are generally very inquisitive and work hard to perfect their English. They are aware that they'll have more travel and career opportunities if they are able to speak English.
TEFL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and is used when talking about teaching people who do NOT live in English speaking countries. On the other hand, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is used when talking about teaching English to people who do not speak it natively but DO live in an English speaking country.
Our favorite sites to find EFL lesson plans for our private lessons
Over the past 20 years we (founders of off2class) have been teaching lessons around the world. For the past five years we've focused on private EFL lessons (both online and offline). Our students have ranged from elderly housewives to preschool aged children and everything in between.
As many of you have likely experienced, it is challenging to find high quality lesson plan content online. Many sites are user generated and carry too much breadth with too little organization. User generated sites have created so much content that it can be difficult to narrow in on just what it is you're looking for. Although, it can be challenging, there are some great sites out there to find EFL lesson plans for your own private lessons. This is a list (in no particular order) of our favorite sites:

Introduction
As a result of globalization and technological progress, English as a language started to be widely learnt and taught. Throughout history, that language was influenced by other languages such as French and German.
Historical Development of the English Language
Baugh et al (2002) have explained the idea that today's English language is resulted from centuries of political development and social events which affected the English history and as a result they had an impact on the English language. The history of the English language can be summarized in four phases of evolution: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Present-Day English. Old English is the language used between 450 AD and 1100 AD, the period from 1100 to 1500 is Middle English, Early Modern English was used between 1500 and 1800, and the period since 1800 is Present-Day English. The Roman conversion of the church of Britain in 597 AD, made contact between England and Latin civilization and ...
Before arriving in Colombia I took a short TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) course, which at least provided me with the basic teaching skills required. My first job teaching English here was for an institute. After arriving and settling down, I visited various English language schools, dropped off my CV, was invited to various interviews by some, and even did some tests to prove I knew the language well enough to teach it.
The tests taught me the first thing you need to know if you are considering teaching English as a foreign language - just because you are a native speaker, doesn't mean you know the language well enough to teach it. The tests some of the language schools gave me proved that there were rules and parts of speech in my language that I didn't know existed. I spoke the language very well, but instinctively, without knowing the basic grammar rules or structure. I remember in one interview in those early days I was asked to prepare a short ten minute class ...
Many new ESL teachers ask me what is a useful thing to bring with them in their suitcase prior to coming to teach English as Foreign Language here in China. Among the many things I tell them to bring is a few newspapers, and here's why...
Newspapers are a cheap, readily-available resource of authentic reading material which can be used in a whole host of ways in the ESL classroom! Newspapers can provide a window to English speaking countries; whats going on in the news, music, sports, business, entertainment, politics and current affairs.
Before, it was thought that using newspapers from native-speaking countries is only useful in a class with advanced level students. Now although admittedly there are more things you can do with newspapers in an advanced English class, there are still lots of interesting activities you can use newspapers for in your Intermediate and Elementary classes.
Bringing English language newspapers into the classroom is sure to bring smiles onto your students ...
Learning can be out lined right from the period when the humans have started to assess learning from the very turn he/ she learns. Form that period the education has gone from end to end followed by a lot of ups and downs and occupied many natures and taken on many structures. At this time the whole leaning has got under the process where the educators and learners come across and share the knowledge among them. The teachers as well gained a lot of knowledge as how to identify the altering and expanding requirements of the students, so the process of conveying knowledge has been changing during the same period.
Education has evolved and incorporated exciting features in it but the duty rests with the teacher to present the facts and figures in such a way so that the learners can feel the real principle of the learning and do not get bored stiff of the learning. With the benefit of the up to date skills the process of teaching has also changed a lot and the interactive learning has ...
Being a Malaysian, my personal experience tells me that most Asian educational institutions are still obsessed with the colonial mentality of only preferring or wanting native speakers as their English teachers. Having said that, of course, hesitatingly, I would also concede that a native's knowledge of the English language is not an automatic passport to employment anywhere abroad, but individuals from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the US and the whole of UK, obviously stand a better chance, when pitted head to head with another equally qualified, if not better candidate, say from Malaysia, in securing an English teaching job.
Malaysia was a former British colony. We are also a member of the Commonwealth. English is taught in schools beginning elementary right up to higher secondary, pursued further onto tertiary levels, to obtain first-degree, master and doctorate in the subject proper. English is the second language of the country and most widely spoken everywhere ...
