Shape a Successful Career with 4 major Qualities and a TEFL Course

by Manika Saha

Dec 26, 2017 Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) 3627 Views

There could hardly be a profession more unique than TEFL. A candidate may be a fresh biology graduate or someone who has never left their hometown; choosing the profession of a TEFL teacher will help make these factors a thing of the past. An online TEFL/TESOL course in Bangalore is unique in that it is easy to qualify and offers valuable employment prospects in exciting locations. Moreover, if an individual happens to possess these 4 qualities, then they are sure to hit instant success in the TEFL teaching profession.

Adaptability

The TEFL industry is a rapidly developing one so there will be plenty of opportunities for the interested candidates. However, no two teaching positions are likely to be the same as every company has an ideology of its own and will want things done in their own way. Candidates should look upon this as a valuable learning experience rather than arguing over it with the employers. There is no end to improving one’s teaching skills.

TEFL professionals are also likely to encounter varying class types throughout their career. From a class of young learners to primary teacher training course in Bangalore, the possibilities are endless. Most job-seekers in this profession make the mistake of trying to pigeon-hole themselves into a particular class type. The opportunities demand that the candidates handle different levels and age groups. Success is guaranteed for those who are willing to keep an open mind about the kind of classes they are required to teach.

The possibility of relocating to another country also cannot be ruled out and this is where adaptability becomes crucial. There will be new ways of doing things with different values and opinions among the masses. Once again keeping an open mind will come in handy to make the experience worthwhile.

Friendly attitude

Another important and positive aspect of the TEFL profession is that the professionals will be meeting new people regularly. Every new class will call for making a first impression and every new job will require them to meet a new group of expats from some faraway land.

If there is one question that is a mainstay in any student feedback form, it is about the demeanor of their teachers. Was the teacher friendly and approachable? Did the teacher seem to take an interest in what the student had to say? There is a very good reason why such questions are put their in the first place. Irrespective of their age, no student would be interested in investing their time and money towards uninteresting conversations with a grouchy person. Genuine affection portrayed with a smile goes a long way in building strong student-teacher bonds.

Being empathetic

One thing that TEFL professionals must do is put themselves in the shoes of their students. Most often, they will come up against individuals who have never seen a foreigner and don’t speak a word of English. If the teachers end up being very demanding and start expressing their disappointment at a perceived lack of success, the whole concept of learning English will scare the life out of the students. It is easy for the teachers to get frustrated with their class but they need to be empathetic towards the lot and look at the entire situation from the perspective of the students. Students of different ages and levels have different needs so their goals and motivations for learning English are also vastly different. Prior analysis of the students’ needs will help teachers plan their lessons better for improved results.

Having a creative touch

Creativity is one quality that makes a better person out of every individual, whether in their personal lives or during a TEFL course in Bangalore. Teachers are required to meet certain lesson objectives in class and can search for activity ideas online but what makes these really work in the classroom is their creative touch. TEFL lessons deal with a lot of creative moments that teachers must embrace. This will allow their students to take the lead and enhance their learning.

The life of a TEFL professional, though not an easy one, is full of exciting challenges that can be dealt with through unorthodox solutions. Thinking of them as fun challenges and adapting to the situations in fun, creative ways will help make successful TEFL teachers out of individuals.
