I just read a very disturbing article written by a teenager who says, "According to guidelines endorsed by the National Education Association (NEA), a student should be assigned no more than 10 minutes per grade level per night. To say that I read this article with my jaw hanging open is probably the understatement of the century.

For many many months, we have seen several articles about the new Common Core curriculum. While some tout its rigor, others feel that it has been "rolled out" too quickly. After 28 years of teaching, I can tell you that the rigor of the Common Core or the speed with which it has been presented is neither the solution nor the problem. Rather, I would like to speak about the Uncommon Core. This is my term for the core that has been lost in recent years. One 4th grade classroom had the students' writing about a specific prompt displayed. One 5th grade classroom had the students' coordinate graphing activity hung up.
