Contract and Relief Teachers and Their Responsibilities, Some Advice for the Head of Department
Relief and contract teachers often come into a school which is completely new to them in every respect. So, as head of department, it was my responsibility to induct them into my department. This handbook was updated each year with each teacher being given an updated version annually. This handbook was also part of my induction program for relief and contract teachers.
This article contains the information in that handbook for the benefit of relief Teachers and temporary teachers on short contracts.

Research teaches us that in order for reading to be beneficial to a reader that it must be embraced as a meaning-making process. This suggests that the act of reading involves deriving understanding from the text. Since reading and writing are reciprocal processes, it can be assumed that just as meaning is gathered from reading that some benefit should be gathered from writing. This indeed is true. Writing can be considered an informational-constructive process because the writer's endeavor should always be to construct and deliver information in a matter that can be successfully transferred to their audience. In order for this to occur, writing instruction should be geared towards ensuring that students write with clarity, cohesiveness, and "sharability".
So, let's begin by exploring clarity. The term clarity, in this sense, suggests that the writer demonstrates the ability to deliver a transparent message to his or her audience. Many times when guiding our developing writers through ...

Routines are very useful in classrooms and apply to both adults’ and children’s classes. These routines include:
Following the same format in each lesson
Learners always do the same action upon starting or finishing an activity e.g. putting their hands on their head, saying ‘finished!’
Always carrying out tasks in the same format. E.g. The teacher does the activity by themselves or with one learner, then two learners do the activity (with prompts form the teacher), finally the class do the activity.
Consistent application of classroom rules.
Reacting to children in a consistent manner. i.e. do not accept on type of behavior one week and then suddenly react very strongly the next week.
Introduce, check and practice new language in a complete fashion.
Advantages of routines in the classroom:
Learners know what is happening at any stage of the lesson
It can help with classroom management. Young learners know what will happen at different stages of the lesson ...

~~There are numerous advantages and disadvantages to teaching/learning in a 1-1 environment. For example:
Learners have teacher’s full attention
Go at the learners pace
Teacher modified input suitable for the learners
No mixed abilities to deal with
Teacher needs to develop strategies & approaches for 1 learner
Higher STT (student talking time)
Focus on individual strengths and weaknesses
Learner more confident/less worried about making mistakes
Exhausting/demanding for both teachers & learners
Little published material available – difficult to adapt resources
Limited/no individual study time
Lesson can get monotonous
Can be difficult for T to take notes for correction
Chance of a personality clash
Learners focus of T attention
Easier to get side-tracked
No peer teaching/correction
Difficult to measure progress
Teacher is always ‘on’
1-1 is probably the oldest method of ...

Motivation is the reason/s for doing something, factors which make us keen to do something. These reasons can be individual and personal or come from external sources.
If learners are motivated then classes are smoother and more productive. For example:
Motivated learners will be…
* Active classroom participants
* Ask questions
* Be prepared to take risks
* Willing to communicate
* Able to learn more
Un-motivated learners will be...
* Disinterested in activities
* Easily distracted
* Unwilling to communicate
As teachers it is our responsibility to ensure the learners are and remain motivated. There are a number of ways to do this:
* Personalise activities
* Do fun, interesting lessons
* Take an interest in the learners
* Be fully engaged in the lesson
* Make sure all tasks are successful
* Balance between praise and correction
* Be supportive of learner needs in the classroom; able to adapt lessons

As people live a monotonous life, it can get quite meaningless. Most individuals in today’s world have been reduced to this programmed robot; one which is supposed to live according to some pre-determined set of rules. You wake up, go to work, come back and then go to sleep. It seems like the society has pressed some buttons that have decided the kind of life you should live. It should come as no surprise that it gets boring. Want to break it? Focus on personal growth development.
Say no to the monotony
There is a way to make sure this does not carry on till eternity. Of course, you do not have to leave everything behind and run away to the mountains, although that might seem tempting at times. It is possible to lead a meaningful life without letting it all go. But that entails one to develop the urge to grow as a human being each day. Yes, personal growth and development are what is being talked about. However, is it so easy to switch on the “improve myself” mode? No, it is a process. ...

I've spent a lot of time as a teacher. In fact, I've been in the field actively for over fifteen years. My teaching experience includes every subject you can think of and every age group from Kindergarten right up to adults.
I've served in many different capacities from teacher to supervisor/ vice principalship to mentor of new teachers, behavioral intervention specialist and others ultimately earning tenure.
But what I have not had much experience with is politics. I've truly never had an interest due to the fact that I could see literally every politician lie and cheat to further themselves or their businesses on a local and national level.
So I never had much interest in learning about the arguments of each "side" (of course, as everyone intuitively knows, both the left and right wings belong to the same creature). I couldn't have told you the difference between a liberal and a conservative or anything else.
I'm registered Independent because I don't want to be put in a box and ...
Academic institutions of learning are now turned into international communities with diverse students of varied and complex cultures. As a result, instructors must strive to put in structures to accommodate all the cultural diversities of students in his/her class. This is very important because educational institutions must be communities where cultural hybridism is encouraged to serve as a pilot community of peace and unity. However, instructors must be assisted with practical steps in knowing how to handle a class of students with varied cultures. This would prevent any form of culture abuse that may stir anger, chaos and mar the unity that should be the hallmark of every academic institution.
The instructor must provide a learning context that is friendly to all cultures. To be able to do this, the instructor must take time to study the different cultures of the students in his/her class. S/he must research and know more about the cultures of the students so that s/he wouldn't ...
