I need quiet to work. I am made nervous and irritable when there are disruptions when I am speaking. Knowing that about myself I needed to create a quiet room. It turns out my students are also more relaxed and pleasant in a quiet place - even though they would NEVER admit that!

They've had six years or so of spending seven hours a day on one thing - hiding the fact that they can't read. They've been hurt in school in a thousand ways a million times before. Well, I'm glad to say that I have, and I'm certain I used to before I learned English Grammar and Punctuation. While working with an English Language Learner (ELL) student some years back I remember asking the student to write a paragraph in English, the handwriting was beautiful and legible, however, there was not a single punctuation mark.

Are we deliberately trying to set ourselves up as the country that is becoming a nation of morons? I just read a very disturbing article written by a teenager who says, "According to guidelines endorsed by the National Education Association (NEA), a student should be assigned no more than 10 minutes per grade level per night. To say that I read this article with my jaw hanging open is probably the understatement of the century.
